Post 9: Description of Workplace

The Teen Zone is one section of the Oakland Public Library. It is on the third floor, in the back right corner of the building. I wouldn't say the room is small nor large, therefore I'll say it is medium sized. There are many different sections in the Teen Zone. They have areas with barriers, for people to have club meetings; and about 20 Mac computers scattered throughout the center of the room. They have comic books, manga, fiction, fantasy/sci-fi, non-fiction, and studying books. There is also a dvd/video game section, a cd section, and board game section.
The teen zone has even dedicated a section to vampires. Looking around the room you can see many posters, drawings, and opportunities/jobs for teens. The library seems to be very ordered and professional, but still maintains fun.

Post 7: My WLE project: Jan 15th

I have not done anything on my WLE project other than the work in academic seminar. For my project I plan to make short movies on how to use iMovie for the macs at the library. I'm going to need to figure out which aspects of iMovie should be taught. I'm also going to need to learn how to use that computerscreen recording program. I suppose my relaxation time is going to get even shorter. I am also behind on my hours because I started my internship late, the library is only open for 5.5 hours, and there isn't any room for me to work there on any other days. I plan to start contacting local libraries to see if they could use any volunteers on Wednesdays or the weekend.
Post 3: First Day: Dec 3rd

I work at the Oakland Public Library in the "Teen Zone." Therefore I would say my workplace serves teenagers and young adults. Since it is a library everything is really organized, in alphabetical order, and what not. They have a sign-up sheet for people to use the computers for an hour. While going through stuff I did find some items to be out of alphabetical order, but that's to be expected, and one of the jobs is to put them back in order. Also it seems some people didn't know they were supposed to sign up for computer use and had to be told to do so.

Post 2: No Internship still: Nov 12th

I still do not have an internship, and to avoid getting a cut from school, I went to my dad's workplace. He partly works for Cal Maritime Academy, the college in Vallejo. Cal Maritime has a focus on preparing students for coast guard, the marines, etc. There he was helping to develop new training programs for students. While I was there I sorted some documents on his computer. Then I sat in on their meeting about their ICS (Incident Command System) program they're trying to develop. They went through the keynote this guy Doug made, and critiqued him about what should be changed or left out. The meeting was about 3-4 hours. The main reason my dad brought me was to take me to the new ship simulator they have. He thought I could possibly get an internship with them, but the guy who runs it wasn't there today. So after getting some lunch, I sorted more documents and then we left.

Intro Post: How I plan to get my WLE: Oct 26th

Once again I am looking for an internship based around video games. It seems like I find opportunities, that then disappear at the last minute. Joel said he had some kind of contact that knew people in the industry. I went with him and a group of students to meet the contact, but unfortunately he had already left for the day. I haven't heard of anything about that contact since. I have a couple possible contacts of my own, but I have yet to attempt to contact them. Unless I hear something new about Joel's contact, I guess attempting to get a hold of my own contacts is the next step.

POST 4: My Mentor: February 3rd

My mentor, Richard, is a fun and easy-going guy. He used to be a teacher, so he understands what the school is doing with the WLE. When Steven and I arrive, I think he thinks of tasks for us to do. I e-mailed him on tuesday to find out when we should arrive and after giving us a time, he gave us our first task of the day, which was to vacuum the museum.

I think my mentor is impressed at how well we take direction. He tells us to move something, we move it. He tells us to clean something, we clean it. He even tells us to play some games, and we play them. One thing Frank and Richard probably aren't impressed with is that we don't know where everything is. We didn't know where to find outlets, cleaning supplies, power switches, etc., but we do know plus it's only been our second day. I feel that my mentor understands the basics of who I am already.

POST 3: First Day (Technically POST 1): January 28th

I went and interned at Playland-Not-At-The-Beach, a museum for old carnivals and amusement parks.  I feel it went over very well. Steven and I arrived a little early, and when we got there they had us sign some forms. Then we had a discussion with our mentor Richard Tuck, who wanted to know what we were hoping to do. A few more volunteers showed up, one of whom had been volunteering for several months. His name was Brett and he was from England. Richard took the volunteers on a tour, as Steven and I were sent to go help Brett with setting up their newest attraction the séance room. They were building a table, so we took measurements of the room, and then laid down tape for where the table would go.

After we finished with the séance room, we were taken to this messy storage room they had that they called "roller coaster" something. They're having a pinball tournament on Feb. 6th, I believe, and it's supposed to be held in that room. I'm guessing we're going to be working on moving stuff out of that room next WLE day. We did move some plexiglass out of there for some displays though. The final task we did that day was throw out old files from their file cabinets. All we really did that day was move stuff from place to place. I did learn how to use a few tools and how to mark where objects can go.

POST 1: How I plan to get my WLE: January 8th

The type of internship I'm looking for is in the field of video games. I am really interested in their creation and development. I started my search for an internship by creating a resume. After finishing my internship, I started to research possible contacts from different video game companies.
